Master Clear Salt System: The Complete Owner's Guide to Master Spas Saltwater Hot Tubs

Last updated: August 2026 | Written by the OEM parts team at Master Spa Parts Online

If you just bought a Master Spas hot tub with the Master Clear® Salt System, converted an existing spa with an Activation or Conversion Kit, or you're standing over a bucket of salt wondering how much to add — this is the guide. We're an authorized Master Spas dealer of 35+ years, we stock the genuine OEM salt system parts and Master Clear chemicals, and we service these systems in the field every week. This page covers the full lifecycle: what the system is, how to start it up correctly, what to buy, what not to buy, week-to-week maintenance, and how to fix the problems that generate most of our support calls.

New to salt water entirely and still deciding? Start with our overview: Salt Systems in Master Spas Hot Tubs: What You Need to Know. This page picks up where that one leaves off.

Quick answer box

  • What it is: A saltwater chlorine generator built into your Master Spas hot tub. It monitors your water and produces its own sanitizer from dissolved salt.
  • What you add: Master Clear Salt Plus at fill and at every water change. That's your entire sanitizer program.
  • What you still manage: pH and Total Alkalinity. Target pH 7.0–7.2 and TA 60–120 ppm.
  • What breaks it: Pool salt, pool chemicals, Spa Hardness Up, and EcoPur® Charge filters. None of these belong in a Master Clear spa.
  • Annual service part: One new Master Clear Salt Cell per year. Drain and refill every 180 days.

What is the Master Clear Salt System?

Traditional salt systems make you decide how much chlorine your spa needs, then run a generator on a timer whether the water needs it or not. Master Clear inverts that. The system continuously monitors the water and only fires a sanitizing cycle when the sanitizer level actually drops. You aren't guessing, and the spa isn't being over-chlorinated on a schedule.

That "generate only on demand" behavior is the entire design argument, and it has three consequences worth understanding before you order parts:

  • Lower salt concentration. Master Clear runs at a lower salinity than legacy salt systems, which is easier on jets, heaters, and hardware. It's also exactly why pool salt is not a substitute — the dosing math assumes a specific purity.
  • Less overchlorination risk. Fewer unnecessary cycles means less cumulative chemical stress on pillows, seals, and the acrylic shell.
  • Fewer consumables. No separate generator box, no cartridges to manage. You replace the Salt Cell once a year and that's the maintenance list.

The four parts of the system

Component Where it lives What it does Replacement interval
Smart Cell / Salt Cell In the filter well, locked into the base connection fitting Tests the water and generates sanitizer. You'll see bubbles rising from it during a cycle. Once a year
Controller Spa equipment area / topside Powers the Smart Cell. Manual buttons, including the * button to force a cycle. Long-life component
Salt Plus Added to the water High-purity granular salt — no added minerals, metals, or contaminants. Dissolves quickly in warm water. At fill + each water change
Master Clear app Your phone (Bluetooth, optional Wi-Fi) Shows salt level, sanitizer level, Smart Cell life, and triggers "Cycle Now."

Which Master Spas models can run Master Clear?

The Master Clear Salt System is offered as an option on these lines:

  • Michael Phelps Legend Series
  • Twilight Series (not available on the TS 240X) — browse Twilight Series filters
  • Clarity Spas
  • LH Series

You can get it three ways: factory-installed with the spa, as an Activation Kit (for spas built salt-ready), or as a Conversion Kit (retrofitting an existing spa). The start-up procedure below is identical for all three.

Before you start: the complete shopping list

Don't begin filling until you have all of this on hand. Stopping halfway through to order a part means your water sits unbalanced for days.

1. The Start-Up Kit

The Master Clear Salt System Start Up Kit (SKU Y454575) gets you 90% of the way there in one purchase. It contains:

  • 1 × Master Clear Salt Plus 10 lb
  • 1 × Micron Pre-filter — screens minerals and particulates out of your fill water
  • 1 oz Fast & Clear Water Boost® — immediate sanitizer floor while the salt system spins up
  • 1 lb Oxidizer — non-chlorine shock
  • 1 lb pH Down and 1 lb pH Up
  • 50-count Master Clear Test Strips

Note the kit does not include Metal Protect. Add a bottle of Master Clear Metal Protect 16 oz to your order — Step 2 below depends on it, and on well water it's the difference between an easy start-up and three days chasing metals.

2. Salt Plus

Master Clear Salt Plus 10 lb is a highly purified granular salt formulated to dissolve fast in spa water. It is not interchangeable with pool salt, water-softener salt, or table salt. Pool salt carries additives and mineral content Master Clear's dosing model doesn't account for.

3. A new set of STANDARD spa filters — not EcoPur

This is the number one mistake we see, so it's worth putting in bold: EcoPur® Charge filters are not compatible with the Master Clear Salt System. If your spa came with EcoPur filters — the ones with the orange handle — they must come out before you fill. Master Spas specifies two standard filter elements in position for a salt spa.

Find the correct standard filter for your model and year:

Not running salt, and just replacing filters? Then the EcoPur Charge filter range is exactly right — including the X268532 EcoPur Charge Filter (PMA-EPR), the Twilight / Legend / Therapool 3-piece set, and the Getaway filter set (X268550 + X268532).

4. A drained and cleaned spa

Start-up assumes a clean, empty shell. Converting an existing spa? Drain it fully, wipe the waterline with Master Clear Multi-Purpose Cleaner, and clear the filter well before you fill.

Items that must NEVER go in a Master Clear spa

Do not use Why
Spa Hardness Up Not compatible with salt system chemistry — fine for a traditional chlorine spa, not for Master Clear
Pool chemicals Wrong concentrations and additives for a 300–500 gallon vessel
Pool salt Contains minerals and impurities Salt Plus is specifically formulated without
EcoPur® Charge filters Explicitly not compatible with Master Clear

Master Clear Salt System start-up: the 8-step procedure

Read all eight steps before you touch anything. Several depend on water temperature and pH being correct first, and doing them out of order means draining and starting over.

Universal technique note: whenever you add any chemical or salt — turn all pumps to high speed, set every diverter to the middle position, and sprinkle the product across the open water surface. Never dump product into the filter or skimmer area.

Step 1 — Fill the spa

  • Confirm the Smart Cell is locked into the base connection fitting at the bottom of the filter housing.
  • Pull any EcoPur filters (orange handles) and install two new standard filters.
  • Attach the Micron Pre-filter to your hose and set it in the filter housing area.
  • Use unsoftened water where possible. Never fill with more than 50% softened water — soft water foams and refuses to hold pH.
  • Fill to the max fill line on the label in or near the filter housing.
  • Power on and prime all pumps until every jet flows.

Step 2 — Add the sequestering agent

  • With pumps and jets running, add the full 16 oz bottle of Master Clear Metal Protect.
  • Let the spa reach your desired operating temperature. Every adjustment after this is more stable at temp — don't rush it.

Step 3 — Test the water

Test pH and Total Alkalinity with Master Clear Test Strips or a reliable test kit.

Parameter Target range
pH 7.0 – 7.2
Total Alkalinity (TA) 60 – 120 ppm

Step 4 — Balance and retest

  • Adjust with Master Clear pH Up or Master Clear pH Down. If alkalinity is the problem, use Master Clear Alkalinity Up — always correct alkalinity before pH.
  • Circulate at least 15 minutes (Master Spas suggests waiting up to 30), then recheck.
  • Add one chemical at a time and retest before making further adjustments.
  • Repeat until you land in range. Do not proceed to salt until you're there.

Step 5 — Add salt (only now)

Two conditions must both be true before the first dose of Salt Plus: pH and TA are balanced, and the water is at or near your target temperature. Warm water dissolves salt dramatically faster.

The chart below is half the maximum total salt amount on purpose. Under-dosing first and topping up is recoverable. Over-salting is not — the only fix is draining water out and refilling.

Spa volume (gallons) 200 250 300 350 400 450 500 550
Cups of Salt Plus (initial dose) 1 ⅝ 2 2 ⅜ 2 ¾ 3 ⅛ 3 ½ 3 ⅞ 4 ¼
  • With all pumps and jets running, add the salt slowly around the perimeter using a measuring scoop.
  • Run pumps 15–30 minutes. If salt is still visible on the spa floor, keep circulating until it's fully dissolved.
  • Do not exceed the maximum salt amount for your spa volume.

Step 6 — Connect the app

While the salt dissolves, pair your phone.

  1. Download the Master Clear Salt System app for your device.
  2. Stand within 5 feet of the spa/controller and open it.
  3. Allow Bluetooth permissions and confirm Bluetooth is on in phone settings.
  4. Select your spa model or fill volume when prompted. The system will not operate until you do this.
  5. Wi-Fi is optional — create an account for remote access, or tap "Skip for now" and run over Bluetooth locally.
  6. Confirm a sanitizing cycle is running. The button under the Level dial should read "Cancel Cycle." If not, tap "Cycle Now." Look for bubbles rising from the Smart Cell in the filter well.

Step 7 — Check and fine-tune the salt level

  • With a cycle running, check the salt level indicator in the app.
  • If the slider sits below halfway, add more salt one cup at a time, maximum, spread across the surface with pumps running.
  • Circulate 15–30 minutes, then recheck — again, during a cycle.
  • Repeat until the slider is near center. Do not overshoot.

Step 8 — Let it circulate before you get in

  • Allow the system to run 24–48 hours to build sufficient sanitizer. Verify with a test strip before entering.
  • Want to soak sooner, or is this a first fill / post-storage fill? Slowly add Fast & Clear Water Boost® until you read 2–4 ppm chlorine. Do not enter until chlorine drops below 5 ppm.
  • After the first 24 hours, check your filters. Metal Protect will have pulled iron and other impurities out of solution and into the filter media. Clean with Master Clear Filter Clean or replace as needed.

Cover rule: always leave the cover open at least 15 minutes after adding any chemical. Trapping off-gassing chemicals under a closed cover is how covers, pillows, and headrests get destroyed early.

Master Clear maintenance schedule

Frequency What to do
Before each use Check alkalinity and pH, adjust as needed. Confirm sanitizer is in range. If low or not reading, raise the cycle Level — one Level at a time only, then wait 24–48 hours before adjusting again. Check salt level in the app or on the controller.
After heavy use The system self-monitors, but after a party or long soak you can force a cycle: tap "Cycle Now" in the app, or press the * button on the controller.
Once a week Add Master Clear Oxidizer Shock to free up combined chlorine and restore clarity. Test and adjust pH. Test sanitizer — if low, bump the cycle Level by one and wait.
Once a month Soak filter elements overnight in Master Clear Filter Clean and rinse before reinstalling. Inspect the Smart Cell for white residue on the electrode plates (that's calcium). If present: remove the cell, install the protective cover over the electrical connection, soak the cell in vinegar for ~15 minutes, hose it off, reinstall.
Every 180 days Drain and refill with fresh water, clean the filters, and repeat the full start-up procedure above.
Once a year Replace the Master Clear Salt Cell. Track remaining lifespan in the app or on the controller.

Because you're on a 180-day drain cycle, most Master Clear owners land on two filter changes and one Salt Cell per year. Buying them together at the water change is the cheapest way to run the system.

Troubleshooting your saltwater hot tub

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Chlorine odor Excess sanitizer, or low pH Add non-chlorine oxidizer shock. Counterintuitive but correct — that smell is usually combined chlorine, not too much free chlorine.
Water odor (musty / swampy) Low sanitizer, pH out of range, or bacteria/algae growth Raise the controller Level by one. Correct pH. Super-chlorinate the system.
Cloudy water Dirty filters, inadequate filtration, unbalanced chemistry, or old water Clean filters and increase filtration time. Rebalance, and add Master Clear Spa Brite clarifier. If the water is past 180 days, change it.
Foaming Body oils, lotions, soap residue, detergent from swimsuits Add a small amount of Master Clear Foam Gone and recheck chemistry. Rinse swimsuits in plain water, never wash them in detergent.
Scum line at the waterline Body oils and dirt Clean the surface with Master Clear Multi-Purpose Cleaner and add Master Clear Oil Gone to the water.
Chalky white scale deposits Minerals in the fill water plus insufficient sequestering agent When drained, scrub with multi-purpose cleaner or white vinegar and a soft cloth. Next fill, use the pre-filter and a full dose of Metal Protect.
Salt slider won't come up Salt not fully dissolved, or checked outside a cycle Only read the slider during a running cycle. Give undissolved salt more circulation time before adding more.
No bubbles from the Smart Cell No cycle running, spa model/volume never set in the app, cell not seated, or end-of-life cell Confirm the cell is locked into the base fitting and the model/fill volume is set in the app, tap "Cycle Now," and check cell life. At or past a year, replace the Salt Cell.

Five mistakes that cost Master Clear owners money

  1. Leaving EcoPur filters in. Orange handle = pull it. Every time.
  2. Adding salt to cold or unbalanced water. It won't dissolve, the app reads low, you add more, and now you're over-salted with no way back except draining.
  3. Jumping the cycle Level by more than one step. One Level at a time with a 24–48 hour wait. Skipping ahead overshoots sanitizer and stresses components.
  4. Filling with softened water. Never more than 50%. Soft water foams and won't hold pH.
  5. Skipping the monthly Smart Cell calcium check. A 15-minute vinegar soak is the entire preventive maintenance program for a part you only get one of per year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert my existing Master Spas hot tub to the Master Clear Salt System?

Yes. Master Spas offers a Conversion Kit for existing spas and an Activation Kit for spas built salt-ready. Both use the same start-up procedure above. Availability is model-dependent — the system is offered on Michael Phelps Legend Series, Twilight Spas (excluding the TS 240X), Clarity Spas, and LH Spas.

How much salt does a Master Clear hot tub need?

It depends on your spa's water volume. Start with half the maximum dose — roughly 2 ⅜ cups of Salt Plus for a 300-gallon spa, 3 ⅛ cups at 400 gallons, 3 ⅞ cups at 500 gallons — then check the app's salt slider during a running cycle and top up one cup at a time until the slider sits near center. Never exceed the maximum for your volume.

Can I use pool salt in a Master Clear hot tub?

No. Pool salt is explicitly listed as incompatible. Master Clear Salt Plus is a high-purity granular salt with no added minerals, metals, or contaminants, and the system's dosing is calibrated to it.

Why can't I use EcoPur Charge filters with a salt system?

EcoPur® Charge filters are not compatible with the Master Clear Salt System. Master Spas directs owners to install two new standard spa filter elements before filling. EcoPur filters are identifiable by their orange handle.

How often do I replace the Master Clear Smart Cell?

Once a year. You can monitor the remaining lifespan in the app or on the system controller, so you'll know it's coming before it fails.

How long before I can get in the hot tub after start-up?

Let the system run 24–48 hours to build sanitizer, and verify with a test strip before entering. To soak sooner, add Fast & Clear Water Boost® until chlorine reads 2–4 ppm, then wait until it drops below 5 ppm before getting in.

How often should I drain a saltwater hot tub?

Every 180 days. Drain, refill with fresh water, clean the filters, and run the full start-up procedure again including a fresh dose of Salt Plus.

What pH should a Master Clear salt water hot tub run at?

pH 7.0–7.2, with Total Alkalinity between 60 and 120 ppm.

Do I still need to add chemicals with a salt system?

You no longer add sanitizer manually — the system generates it. You still manage pH and Total Alkalinity, add a weekly oxidizer shock, and use a sequestering agent at each fill.

Is it normal to see white residue on the Smart Cell?

It means calcium is building up on the electrode plates. Remove the cell, cap the electrical connection with the protective cover, soak it in vinegar for about 15 minutes, rinse with a hose, and reinstall. Check monthly.
