A hot tub cover weighs between 50 and 100 pounds when it's dry. Add a few years of absorbed moisture and it can push past 150. That's the real reason cover lifters exist — not convenience, but the fact that a waterlogged cover dragged off a spa twice a day destroys itself, scratches the acrylic, and wrecks your back doing it.
The problem is that cover lifters are one of the most commonly mis-ordered parts we sell. They're non-returnable across every brand we carry, and the single most common reason for a bad order isn't the spa model — it's clearance. People measure the tub and forget to measure the wall behind it.
This guide fixes that. Measure first, then match.
Start here: the 60-second clearance test
Before you look at a single product, go outside with a tape measure and write down three numbers.
- Rear clearance — from the back edge of the spa cabinet to the nearest wall, fence, railing, or shrub. This is the number that eliminates the most options.
- Side clearance — from each side of the cabinet to whatever is next to it.
- Cabinet height — ground to the top lip of the cabinet. Matters enormously for undermount lifters and swim spas.
Also note your cover's longest dimension and your spa's shape. Square and rectangular spas have the most options. Round, octagonal, and large-radius or cut-corner spas cut the field down sharply.
Then match your rear clearance to this:

The four mounting styles (and why it matters)
How a lifter attaches to your spa determines whether you can install it at all, whether it puts screws in your cabinet, and whether you can ever move the tub without disassembly.
1. Cabinet-mount (screws into the cabinet)
Brackets bolt through the spa's side panels. Strongest and most common. Downside: permanent holes in the cabinet. Used by the Master Lift M, Master Lift EZ, and Cover Ex.
2. Undermount (base plate slides under the spa)
A plate sits beneath the spa and is held down by the weight of the tub itself. No screws, no holes. The catch is significant: the spa must be drained and lifted to install it. Plan this for a water change, not a random Saturday. Used by the Cover Valet Caddy and the Rock-It.
3. Deck or edge-mount
Mounts to the edge of the cabinet or directly to your deck surface. The Cover Valet PRO works this way, which is what lets it run on just 2" of side clearance.
4. Integrated
Designed for a specific spa or swim spa footprint and mounted as part of the structure. The Master Integrated 360 line falls here. Highest cost, cleanest look, least flexibility.

Three compatibility traps that cause most bad orders
Trap 1: Round and octagonal spas
Both Master Lift models are explicitly not compatible with octagon or round-shaped hot tubs. Same for spas with large radius corners or cut corners. If that's your tub, the Cover Valet Caddy is purpose-built for it — its undermount base plate design works across shapes that defeat bracket-mounted lifters. If you don't have the Caddy's 36" of clearance, the Spa Side Cover Stand is the fallback.
Trap 2: Large-footprint hot tubs
The Master Lift EZ is not compatible with 9×8 or 10×8 hot tubs, despite fitting most other rectangular spas. For a 9'-wide tub you want the Master Integrated 360.
Trap 3: Swim spa height
Swim spas are tall, and height determines the part number. The Master Integrated 360 comes in a 47–53" version (X619235) and a 60" version (X619236) — these are not interchangeable. Measure ground to cabinet lip.

Don't replace the lifter — replace the part
Most "my cover lifter is broken" calls are one failed gas shock, not a dead frame. Shocks are wear items; the aluminum frame usually outlives them by years. Before you spend $300, check whether one of these fixes it.

Browse everything in Cover Lifter Parts. Unlike complete lifters, replacement parts are ordinary stocked items — if you're unsure which shock you have, send us a photo of the lifter and the printing on the old shock body.
Diagnosing before you buy: if the cover falls hard instead of easing down, or won't stay up on its own, the gas shock has lost charge — that's a shock, not a frame. If the arm is bent or a weld has cracked, that's an arm or bracket. If the frame is corroded through at the mounting points, replace the lifter.
Getting a longer life out of the lifter you have
- Fold the cover before you lift. Lifters are designed to pivot a folded cover, not drag an open one. Most bent arms we see come from lifting unfolded.
- Fix a waterlogged cover, don't fight it. A saturated cover can exceed the lifter's design load and will bend arms and blow shocks. If yours is sagging, heavy, or has a torn vapor barrier, it's past due — see hot tub covers and swim spa covers.
- Check mounting bolts twice a year. Thermal cycling loosens hardware. Two minutes with a wrench prevents a bent frame.
- Rinse the pivot points. Especially near salt water systems or coastal air. Powder coating resists corrosion but doesn't stop it at fastener heads.
- Don't leave the cover parked upright in high wind. A cover in the open position is a sail, and wind loading is a common cause of bent arms.
Frequently asked questions
How much clearance do I need for a hot tub cover lifter?
It depends on the model. The Cover Valet PRO needs as little as 2" of side and 6" of rear clearance. The Master Lift EZ needs 5" side and 6" rear. The Cover Ex needs 12–15" rear, the Master Lift M needs 15", the Rock-It needs 18", and the Cover Valet Caddy needs 36". Measure from the back of the spa cabinet to the nearest obstruction before ordering.
Are cover lifters returnable?
No. Cover lifters are non-returnable across all brands. Replacement parts like shocks, arms, and brackets are ordinary stocked items and follow standard return policy. This is exactly why measuring first matters.
Will a cover lifter work on a round or octagonal hot tub?
Most won't. The Master Lift M and Master Lift EZ are both explicitly incompatible with octagon and round spas. The Cover Valet Caddy is designed for these shapes, including spas with large radius or cut corners, thanks to its undermount base plate. If you lack the Caddy's 36" clearance, a Spa Side Cover Stand is the alternative.
Do I have to drain my hot tub to install a cover lifter?
Only for undermount models. The Rock-It's under-spa plates are held in place by the weight of the spa and must be installed while the spa is empty. Cabinet-mount lifters like the Master Lift M, Master Lift EZ, and Cover Ex install with the spa full. Plan undermount installs around a scheduled water change.
My cover lifter won't hold the cover up. Do I need a new one?
Usually not. A cover that drops hard or won't stay open almost always means the gas shock has lost its charge, and shocks are inexpensive replaceable parts. Replace the whole lifter only if the frame itself is bent, cracked, or corroded through at the mounting points.
Can I use a hot tub cover lifter on a swim spa?
Some. The Cover Ex is swim spa compatible at all spa heights. The Master Integrated 360 comes in swim-spa-specific versions for 47–53" and 60" heights, and the Master XL Upright Lift covers 19' swim spas. A Cover Valet Caddy can be adapted to spas 41–55" tall with the Swim Spa Extension Kit.
What if I have no clearance at all?
Use a Spa Side Cover Stand. It requires no hardware, no assembly, and works with any spa shape. It doesn't lift the cover for you, but it keeps it off the ground, which is where most cover damage actually comes from.
Does a cover lifter really extend cover life?
Yes, and this is the part owners underestimate. Dragging a cover across the cabinet abrades the vinyl, stresses the center fold seam, and grinds grit into the acrylic shell. Setting a cover on the ground soaks the foam core from below and lets dirt and lawn chemicals reach the vapor barrier. A lifter eliminates both.
